INDIO, California – Hollywood actress Scarlett Johansson passed through Indio, California recently and apparently was quite impressed with the residents there. In an interview this week Johansson said:
“Well, we had a flat tire just as we were about to leave the city limits of Indio and two, maybe three cars pulled over within five minutes to help us with it. And no, they had no idea who I was before they pulled over. They were very helpful and very friendly. I gotta say, I was really impressed with the people of Indio! That would’ve never happened in L.A.!”
Scarlett’s vehicle was back on the road within a short period of time. What a great testament to the residents of Indio!

Indio is also the home of the Circle Theatre Acting Company which has an incredible reputation and performs in the J. Roderick Basehore Theatre at Indio High School.
I remember Mr. Basehore!! He was my drama teacher at Indio High 1980-1982. I still think of the wonderful experience I had after all of these years!!
I think it is very nice Ms Johansson made the comments she did, but I find one thing troubling. That is that she was amazed by the kindness extended. There are good people everywhere. My home town of New York City always gets the rap of being cold and impersonal, but I guarantee if you have car trouble, lost your wallet or can’t find an address you will have people coming to your aid. I have lived here in the desert for 15 years now and have found nice people in every community of the Coachella Valley. Scarlett acts as if she won the lottery. Further she advises, the people helping didn’t know who she was. Right! Welcome to Indio – a real town, with nice people. If you take the time to look around you will find such places everywhere.
My mom had a flat tire in Palm Desert many, many years ago and Bing Crosby actually pulled over to help her and her friends.
In the early sixties were closing his furniture store for the day, when we noticed a couple trying to fix their car’s flat tire. We immediately offered to help. The gentleman had heart issues; and his wife was very grateful. Their to pay us we refused. They asked for our address; and for the next ten years we received a holiday basket from Canada. Indio people help because we want to help people in a crisis.
